What is Outlook PST?

MS Outlook is a complete Outlook package, which includes Outlook emails, contacts, journals, alerts, to-do-list etc. There is Outlook Personal Folders file. In Outlook, data is stored in files with .PST extension. Outlook can store more than one PST files. Outlook version 2000 and 2002 store PST with ANSI format, which had 2 GB maximum file size limit whereas later Outlook versions store PST with UNICODE format that has 20 GB maximum file size limit. In case Outlook goes beyond 2GB limit, then you need to create a new PST file or you can erase your current data stored in PST file to reduce its size to 2 GB.

Cut PST File

If you are using Outlook then you must be facing problems due to excessive PST file size. To cut down this problem you can trim your PST file size to obtain several benefits; as, when you start Outlook or when you try to see mail f older, Outlook requires carrying the content from your PST file. If your PST file size increases, then Outlook performs its tasks slowly. If you have been storing your email data in Outlook PST files for a long period of time, then it must have resulted in large sized PST files, which will further slower down the speed of the application and hence, your work will hamper. You can avoid the problems you face due to large sized PST files by using some outside tool to trim PST file.

Step by step Process to Reduce PST File Size

If you delete items from Personal Folder file, the size of PST file will remain same, until you compact the file. Follow the three simple steps given below to compact PST files:

  1. Click Data File Management on the file menu
  2. Click the data file that you wish to compact
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Click Compact

The aforesaid three steps are more than sufficient to compact PST data in few minutes.
